Understanding the Impact of Violent Deaths at Home in Tampa Bay

No family is ever ready for a violent death in their home. In the hours after, people are in shock, answering questions from law enforcement, and calling relatives, and then someone asks, “Who cleans this up?”

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a reminder that these tragedies happen in our own neighborhoods, from Tampa to Bradenton and across Manatee, Pinellas, Pasco, and Hillsborough counties. If your family is facing this right now, we’re sorry. This guide covers what happens next so you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Who handles cleanup after a violent death?

Most families assume police, the fire department, or the medical examiner take care of it. They don’t. Once investigators release the scene, responsibility for the home passes to the property owner, the family, or the landlord.

That usually happens fast, sometimes within a few hours. Families are left with a room, or an entire home, that isn’t safe to enter, and no idea who to call. That’s where a professional trauma cleanup company comes in.

Why families shouldn’t clean it themselves

It’s natural to want to protect loved ones from seeing the scene. But cleaning it yourself puts your health and your heart at risk.

  • Health risks. Blood and bodily fluids can carry bloodborne pathogens such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. Proper cleanup requires protective equipment, hospital-grade disinfectants, and regulated biohazard disposal.
  • Hidden contamination. Fluids soak into carpet padding, subfloors, drywall, and furniture. Surface cleaning can leave contamination and odors behind that show up weeks later.
  • Emotional toll. No one should have to clean up after losing someone they love. Handing this off lets you focus on your family, arrangements, and healing.

A certified team removes and disposes of contaminated materials, disinfects what can be saved, and confirms the space is safe before you go back in.

Will insurance cover it?

Often, yes. Many homeowners and renters policies cover trauma and biohazard cleanup, but coverage varies by policy and situation.

  1. Call your insurance company before paying out of pocket. Ask whether trauma or biohazard cleanup is covered and how to start a claim.
  2. Keep records. Note the date, the police report or case number, and who you spoke with at the insurer.
  3. Let us handle it from there. Once your claim is open, Spaulding Decon works directly with your insurance company, including the documentation, so you don’t have to.

If you rent, let your landlord know. The property owner’s policy may apply instead of, or in addition to, yours.
