The recession of 2008 and the virus of 2020 has taught me one thing as the founder of a crime scene cleaning franchise; we are 100% recession proof. As a matter of fact, we have seen two giant increases in business over the 15 years since I started this company. One was in 2008 when the recession hit, and the foreclosures were at an all-time high. The second is now, during the pandemic. Through the last 15 years I have been in business, I can say that I have never furloughed or terminated anyone due to lack of business, or a recession.

While 2008 and 2020 are extremely different in both cause and effect, we are experiencing booming growth in both scenarios. The difference between the two scenarios is huge. First, in 2008 our residential work increased on foreclosures dealing with mold and drug lab issues. There were no jobs to be had and when that occurs crime goes up and manufacturing methamphetamine unfortunately increases and becomes a “job” for some people. The biggest regret I have from 2008 is not having the foresight to buy as much real estate as possible during that time. Timing is everything, and that apparently was not our time to add real estate investments to our business structure.

In 2016 I decided to franchise the company and add real estate as one of our streams of revenue. It has been a total game changer for not only me personally but our franchisees. We are giving our customers an option they otherwise would not have. We are also adding a huge stream of revenue for our franchisees. I teach the real estate classes to new franchisees and I enjoy this part of the business the most. Real estate has allowed me to create massive wealth. It was a true homerun to merge two of my passions into one business.

Fast forward to 2020 and we had 24 locations with 11 owners. Already having been in the disinfection business we boomed very quickly and were able to leverage our experience and longevity in the industry. We took on jobs in States where we did not have franchisees and created relationships that will last for many years to come. We are pivoting to including continual disinfection services for all these new clients. We are grateful for the confidence in our system and process for making everyone safe.

How has Covid-19 changed our world? I see most people wearing masks in public and about half wearing gloves in public. I see many businesses restructuring how their employees work and allowing more work from home which will decrease the need for large office spaces. This will create more commercial spaces to be open and vacant. We are seeing the sense of urgency and stress of liability on disinfecting offices, restaurants, gyms and other facilities that the public has access too.

On a positive note, I am also seeing more exercise outside, more people spending time with family, and more focus on saving money. These are all fantastic things. In every tragedy there is a huge positive side. Things happen for us, NOT to us. If you were furloughed, or laid off from your job maybe that is because you should be doing something else, working for a different company, or working for yourself. Never give up, look forward. There is a reason for everything.

Stay Strong!
