TAMPA, Fla. – (Dec. 18, 2006) – Spaulding Decon, LLC, a fully licensed and certified biohazard cleaning and decontamination business for commercial, residential and industrial locations, has experienced steady growth during its first year – growth that is due as much to the company’s expertise as it is to the founder’s tireless efforts to educate the public on the dangers presented by improperly cleaned crime and accident sites.

“People are not aware of the significant health dangers that remain when hazardous waste is simply covered up and not properly decontaminated,” said Laura Spaulding, founder of Spaulding Decon and a former seven-year law enforcement officer. “Some companies may do general cleaning, but unless they are also decontaminating and removing the danger, they are simply masking the problem temporarily. It’s like putting a bandage on an amputation.

Crime, Trauma Scene Cleaning Company Celebrates One Year of Providing Professional Biohazard Cleaning, Decontamination Services

TAMPA, Fla.

“Most citizens think the police department cleans up after a traumatic event, but that burden actually lies with the homeowner or family,” she added, noting that most homeowners’ or automobile insurance policies cover the cost of the clean up.

Crime and accidental death scenes, “pack rat” properties and commercial and industrial accidents are teeming with bloodborne pathogens, viral-infected rodent and human fecal matter and chemical contaminants that cannot be eliminated with standard cleaning processes and supplies. Unless they are decontaminated by a specially trained professional with the proper equipment and protective gear, these sites remain a health hazard.

“While it may be possible to eliminate the visible problem, the invisible contaminants that remain are the most dangerous to humans. In fact, without proper protective equipment, untrained individuals are actually putting themselves at risk attempting to clean these areas,” said Spaulding.

Businesses and residents need to be aware of the personal safety and liability issues involved in these situations, which have already traumatized those who are burdened with the responsibility for returning the site to a safe status. Companies can also be liable if they put their employees and customers at risk by failing to properly disinfect their facilities or properly decontaminate accident sites.

Before launching Spaulding Decon, Spaulding underwent extensive, hands-on training to become a certified crime scene cleaner technician. She trained under industry leader Michael Tillman, owner of Amdecon in Irving, Texas, where she learned the ins and outs of working with bloodborne pathogens and OSHA guidelines.

Spaulding Decon and its employees are re-certified annually in the handling of bloodborne pathogens, and the company undergoes annual inspections by the Hillsborough County Health Department. Spaulding Decon is also certified to transport the biohazardous materials it removes from clean-up sites.
